Study Subject(s):Wind Turbines and Aero-acoustic Noise
Course Level:PhD
Scholarship Provider: DTU
Scholarship can be taken at: Denmark
Eligibility:
Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering, mathematics, physics or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree. Experience with wind energy or acoustics, as well as good communication skills are considered advantageous for obtaining the position.
Scholarship Open for International Students: No
Scholarship Description: Noise is an increasing concern both for wind turbine manufacturers and communities living nearby wind turbines. These concerns are exacerbated by the constant increase of wind turbine sizes and the cost advantages of locating wind turbines close to the consumers. The design of low-noise wind turbines requires the use of validated and accurate engineering noise models. The main sources of noise generated by a wind turbine have been identified as turbulent inflow noise and trailing edge noise.
The first goal of this PhD project is to pursue the theoretical work ongoing at Risø DTU for improving existing models of the two above noise mechanisms. In order to improve the reliability of these models, extensive cross-comparisons with CAA (Computational Aero-Acoustics) and experimental work will be conducted. As a second objective, the previous prediction methods should be applied both to rotor design and/or comparison with measurement of rotor noise for a real wind turbine.
